Those of you who’ve been reading my website for a long time will know that I always like to advertise summer schools. They’re not ideal for everyone, of course – but a lot of people really enjoy them, to the point of going back year after year. So if you haven’t tried one before, maybe this year you should consider it…!
The big annual list of summer schools in Greek, Latin and other Classical Stuff is compiled by the wonderful Cressida Ryan on her blog. Do take a look in case there’s something that appeals to you, or is close enough to make it feasible.
If you’re interested in a trip to Durham (which is a pretty amazing setting for a summer school) this summer, below is a message from OU PhD student Tony Potter, who is involved with organising this year’s JACT Durham Greek & Latin Summer School. Oh, and some years ago I collected feedback on the Durham Summer School (with pretty photos!) from participants, which you can read here.
Hello!
Registration for the 31st JACT Durham Greek & Latin Summer School is now open! The Summer School will be held as usual at St John’s College, Durham University, and will run from Saturday 26th July to Saturday 2nd August 2025.

Tuition in either Latin or Ancient Greek is available at five levels (Beginner, Post-Beginner, Intermediate, Higher & Advanced). We are also offering a Classical Civilisation module on the Homeric Hero. The JACT Durham Greek & Latin Summer School offers the ideal opportunity for students of all ages and educational backgrounds to start out, or brush up on their Latin or Ancient Greek, whilst our Homeric Hero module provides a combined introduction to the epic poems of Homer (in translation), blended with an introduction to the Ancient Greek language.
Full details of the Summer School and the available courses are available online at: https://www.durhamglss.org/and through our social channels. We also have a limited number of student bursaries available to help cover the costs of attending the Summer School. Bursaries are awarded based on need and not on a first-come-first-served basis, so please see full details on the course website for information about the bursary application process.
Registration is open to all!
Should you have any queries, please get in touch with the course secretary on – Rosie.Durham.LGSS@gmail.com.
See you in July!
